Light Painting at dusk

Portfolio shoot for Darrin Dighton photography

Darrin was looking to bring his portfolio to life and showcase his talents as an exceptional light painter and photographer.

I had previously found this spot, a circular formation of rocks that created a small temporary lake, fed straight from the ocean, that was at the mercy of the tides, with a different photoshoot in mind. This turned out to be perfect, as the sun set and the darkness took over, we lucked out with the tide. As it slowly went out, over a few hours we managed to get the full affect of the lights against the water.

What is Light Painting? Simply put, it is the method of using a light source in front of a camera that set to take a long (very long) exposure photograph. This meant I had to hold very still, and Darrin had a remote to start the camera, then had to “paint” with his various lights behind me as quickly as possible, until the timer finished. If you look closely, you can see in some images where my clothing may have swayed in the wind, or my balanced wobbled slightly.

To get the look of the perfect reflection on the water, I had to be higher then the water, but only just enough so it did not disrupt the flow of the photograph.

Darrin has gone on to create some beautiful work and has been celebrated for his creativity and unique style, that differs from the norm.
